Phillies hang on to defeat Cubs, stay in wild-card race

CHICAGO -- Chase Utley's homer wasn't his only hit Monday night.

A nasty collision between Aaron Rowand and Utley overshadowed the Philadelphia Phillies' 6-5 victory over the Chicago Cubs.

"They came together pretty good," Phillies manager Charlie Manuel said. "It was fortunate someone didn't get hurt worse."

Rowand hobbled off the field with a sprained left ankle after tangling with Utley in the eighth inning. Rowand was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital for precautionary X-rays.

"I hope it's not broken," he said. "I want to get back out there soon, because I've been swinging the bat better lately. I'll keep my fingers crossed."

John Mabry hit a shallow fly, and Rowand came running in from center field while Utley headed back from second base. Utley had the ball in his glove, but tagged Rowand hard in the left shoulder with his glove as they collided. The ball came loose, and Rowand went end over end to the ground. Utley also hit the field.

Rowand said he hit a hole in the outfield while running and didn't see Utley until it was too late. He immediately felt pain in his neck, as well as his wrist. But after he got up, only his ankle hurt.

"My foot wasn't planted when I hit Chase," Rowand said. "We'll see what happens. The doctor said that if he had to guess, he didn't think" it was broken.

Rowand was down for a few minutes before leaving with the help of two teammates. Mabry got a triple on the play. Utley was sore after the game but said he otherwise was unhurt.

Jimmy Rollins also homered, leading Jon Lieber and the Phillies to their third straight win. They moved back to .500 for the first time since June 19 and stayed within 2½ games of Cincinnati in the NL wild-card race.

Jacque Jones hit a two-run homer in the ninth for the Cubs. Arthur Rhodes held on for his third save.

Jones and Aramis Ramirez, who doubled twice, each had four hits.

Rollins hit a two-run homer off Rich Hill to cap a four-run fourth. Only one run in the inning was earned after a throwing error by shortstop Ronny Cedeno.

Utley led off the fifth with his 22nd homer for a 5-0 lead.

Lieber (6-9) won consecutive starts for the first time since May, when he won three straight. He gave up two runs on 11 hits in 6 2/3 innings.

"It seemed like every inning someone was on base," Lieber said. "But I have to give a lot of credit to my defense."

Freddie Bynum and Juan Pierre singled in the Cubs' seventh. A wild pitch scored one run, Ramirez hit an RBI double and Jones singled off reliever Aaron Fultz to make it 5-3.

Pat Burrell doubled and scored on Abraham Nunez's single in the eighth to give the Phillies a three-run cushion.

Hill (3-6) gave up five hits and two earned runs in six innings.

Hill walked Burrell starting the fourth and gave up a double to Rowand. One out later, Cedeno's throw home on Nunez's grounder hit Burrell on the helmet, and Rowand also scored on the play.

"That wasn't a very good decision, going home on that ball," Baker said. "Rollins hits one out to make it four-run fourth inning. In that situation with the pitcher up next, even if they score one, it's just 1-0."

Cedeno thought he had the play, but Baker called it "overplaying."

"That's a play where I have to throw it perfect," Cedeno said. "When I got that slow ground ball, I went to home plate. I almost made the play, but I can't do anything about it right now."

Cedeno had moved from second to shortstop, where he had played the first four months of the season, in the fourth. Cedeno replaced Cesar Izturis, who left the game with a strained right hamstring.

"Possibly," Baker said of Izturis going on the DL. "It's the hamstring again. That's why we took him out of the game. The guys are banged up."

Notes

  • Bynum's pinch-hit single in the seventh was his first appearance since June 24, when he went on the DL with shoulder problems. He was activated before the game.
  • Izturis was listed as day-to-day with the hamstring that has troubled him at times this season.
  • Nunez had two RBI, one game after he had a career high-tying four in a win over Washington.
  • This four-game series is the first meeting of the Cubs and Phillies this season. The Cubs travel to Philadelphia on Sept. 18-20.
  • Rollins stole two bases to give him 200 for his career, putting him in sole possession of 10th place on the team list.
  • Pierre extended his hitting streak to 13 games, longest for a Cub this season.
  • After the game, the Phillies placed closer Tom Gordon on the 15-day DL with a strained right shoulder, retroactive to Aug. 13.
