Padres 7, Marlins 6 (12 innings)

CBS SportsLine.com wire reports

MIAMI -- Josh Bard thought he'd be out. He was wrong, and the San Diego Padres were delighted.

Bard's soft line drive in the 12th inning sailed past Florida second baseman Dan Uggla, brought Brian Giles home with the winning run and lifted the Padres to a 7-6 win over the Marlins on Saturday night.

"I was grateful to get a pitch up," Bard said, "and grateful that he didn't catch it."

The Padres trailed 6-3 after seven innings and 6-4 after eight, before a pair of Florida outfield errors helped San Diego score two unearned runs in the ninth to tie the game. Only one of the Marlins' final 14 batters reached base, and Bard eventually broke through.

Brian Giles finished with three hits, Marcus Giles scored twice and Bard drove in a pair of runs for San Diego, which got four hits in the 12th off Lee Gardner (0-2), the seventh Marlins pitcher.

"I think the guys are feeling really good about this win," Padres manager Bud Black said. "Which they should."

Miguel Olivo had three doubles and two RBI, while Mike Jacobs and Hanley Ramirez each had two hits for Florida, which is 0-3 in extra innings this season. The Marlins left the bases loaded in the eighth, and didn't get another baserunner until Olivo's third double in the 12th.

"We had them in the ninth inning," Marlins manager Fredi Gonzalez said. "Couple of bloop singles in there, and you're asking for trouble."

Justin Hampson (1-1) worked a perfect 11th for San Diego, and Trevor Hoffman -- the eighth Padres pitcher -- struck out Joe Borchard with Olivo at second for his seventh save in nine chances.

Florida closer Henry Owens blew his first save in five chances in the ninth, by little fault of his own. Mike Cameron moved to third when Jose Cruz Jr.'s single was bobbled by right fielder Borchard. Cameron scored on pinch-hitter Oscar Robles' soft single to center, and Cruz scored on the same play to tie the game when Alfredo Amezaga's throw got past Miguel Cabrera at third base.

"That's how this game is sometimes," Owens said. "Sometimes they don't hit the ball very hard, but they find holes. Wasn't our night."

The Marlins lost center fielder Cody Ross in the fourth inning with a left hamstring strain; he'll be re-evaluated Sunday. Ross hit his fourth homer in the second and got hurt as he scored on Olivo's first RBI double in the fourth.

Florida took a 6-3 lead in the seventh on RBI singles by Josh Willingham and Jacobs, plus a squeeze bunt by Amezaga that scored Willingham. Padres reliever Cla Meredith, who didn't give up a run in 12 April appearances, yielded all three runs and has allowed five in his two May outings.

But the Marlins let him off the hook in the ninth.

"We keep it exciting," Black said.

Florida starter Sergio Mitre went into the seventh, allowing four hits and three runs (one earned) in his return from the disabled list with a blister problem. San Diego's David Wells -- whose last start at the Marlins' ballpark came in Game 5 of the 2003 World Series with the New York Yankees, a matchup he left following one inning with back spasms -- allowed eight hits and three earned runs in 5 1/3 innings.

Dave Winfield, who spent the first eight seasons of his eventual Hall of Fame career with the Padres, threw out one of the ceremonial first pitches. ... Wells is no fireballer, but the pitch-speed meter on the scoreboard measured one of his offerings to Miguel Cabrera at a highly doubtful 49 mph. Cabrera singled later in the game, stretching his hitting streak to 10 games. ... Wells got his 16th career hit, a single to center, off Mitre in the fifth; Mitre followed in his half of the inning with a leadoff double off the scoreboard in left-center. ... Olivo had two RBIs in his previous seven games. ... Padres reliever Heath Bell struck out the side in a perfect 10th, lowering his ERA to 0.46 in 15 appearances.
