Blue Jays 9, Rockies (10 innings)

TORONTO -- John McDonald was relatively calm after delivering the big hit in Toronto's thrilling win.

McDonald hit a two-run single in the 10th inning and Curtis Thigpen scored the winning run on catcher Chris Iannetta's throwing error, giving the Blue Jays a wild 9-8 victory over the Colorado Rockies on Friday night.

"We're excited to come back to the ballpark now," McDonald said. "You can already feel the excitement in here."

Troy Tulowitzki's two-run homer gave the Rockies an 8-6 lead in the 10th but Toronto loaded the bases in the bottom half on three straight singles from Matt Stairs, Aaron Hill and Thigpen.

McDonald followed with a single to left off Brian Fuentes (0-1), scoring Stairs and Hill. Matt Holliday threw to the plate and Iannetta fired to third to try and catch Thigpen but his throw sailed down the left-field line.

Rockies manager Clint Hurdle said the throw was "ill-advised."

"I really don't think there was a play," Hurdle said. "You've got a chance of still maybe getting out of it. I just don't know that's a throw you need to make."

Iannetta didn't regret the play, just the outcome.

"That's a throw that I know I can make," he said. "It just got away from me. I knew it was in left field as soon as I released it."

It was Fuentes' third blown save.

"I made a bad pitch to Stairs and he got a hit," Fuentes said. "After that it was just bloops hits, trying to get the ball in play and it was enough."

Fuentes came in having saved nine straight games on the road.

"Tito saved so many games in a row," Hurdle said. "He's only human."

The Blue Jays, who gave up six runs in the eighth inning of Thursday's 8-4 loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers, improved to 4-0 at home against Colorado.

"That's not exactly how you draw it up but the bottom line is we got one in the win column," said Troy Glaus, who had three RBI.

Brad Hawpe homered and had three RBI and Todd Helton had three hits for the Rockies, who lost for the first time in four games. Colorado remains a major league-best 20-8 since May 22.

The Rockies came to Toronto after sweeping a three-game series from the New York Yankees in Denver.

Adam Lind, Alex Rios and Vernon Wells homered for the Blue Jays.

Brian Wolfe (1-0) pitched to one batter in the 10th to record his first major league win.

Tulowitzki walked, stole second and scored on Helton's single in the first to give Colorado a 1-0 lead. The rookie shortstop appeared to injure his left knee when it struck the foot of Toronto catcher Gregg Zaun as he slid across the plate, ripping a large hole in his uniform pants. Tulowitzki was checked on the field by Rockies trainer Keith Dugger, and was late coming out for the second because he was changing.

Rios homered in the bottom half, and Lind and Wells hit solo drives in the third to give Toronto a 3-2 lead.

Josh Towers allowed five runs and 11 hits in 4 1/3 innings for the Blue Jays. Towers is 0-2 with a 7.70 ERA in three starts since replacing Tomo Ohka in the rotation on June 11.

Colorado starter Jason Hirsh left the game with one out in the fifth after loading the bases with two walks and a single. Hirsh gave up five runs and five hits, walked three and struck out two.

"He's not happy," Hurdle said. "He expects better."

Taylor Buchholz relieved Hirsh and gave up a two-run single to Glaus, making it 6-5.

Toronto tied it at 6 in the seventh when Wells led off with a single, went to third on a base hit by Zaun and scored on Glaus' sacrifice fly.

"Every inning we scored, we gave runs back up," Hurdle said.

Notes

Wells' homer snapped an 0-for-18 slump, and Lind's homer ended an 0-for-13 skid. ... Wells singled in the seventh for his 1,000th career hit. ... Taveras collected his major league-leading 22nd bunt single in the fourth.
