Burrell caps Phils' rally vs. Marlins; Utley clubs MLB-best 20th HR

PHILADELPHIA -- Chase Utley and the Philadelphia Phillies can do more than just hit. They can play a little defense, too.

Utley hit his major league-leading 20th homer, Pat Burrell had a tiebreaking, two-run double and the Phillies rallied to beat the Florida Marlins 7-5 on Sunday.

Utley went deep for the fourth straight game and Geoff Jenkins connected for the second pinch-hit homer of his career for Philadelphia, which won the weekend series and moved back into first in the NL East.

The Phillies have won five of six on the homestand while scoring 55 runs, but they also got it done in the field Sunday.

Utley made a terrific play on a grounder up the middle by Jeremy Hermida to close the fifth. Ryan Howard grabbed a sharp liner by Mike Jacobs and turned it into a double play in the sixth. Howard also made a sprawling catch on a sacrifice attempt by Jacque Jones in the seventh.

"We know we're going to score runs," Jenkins said. "We feel like we can always come back. To play as great as we did defensively gives us confidence as well. We're definitely a much more confident team in the field."

Jacobs hit a solo homer in the second and a three-run drive in the third to help the Marlins build a 5-1 lead. He improved to 5-for-8 with three homers in his career against 45-year-old Philadelphia left-hander Jamie Moyer.

"Sometimes, it's tough against Jamie because you can be too aggressive," Jacobs said. "I tried not to do too much."

Jenkins' two-run drive off Doug Waechter (0-1) tied it at 5 in the sixth. Waechter entered with a stretch of 11 1/3 scoreless innings, the longest active streak in the major leagues.

The Phillies went ahead for good in the seventh. With two outs and runners on first and second, Florida manager Fredi Gonzalez replaced Taylor Tankersley with Logan Kensing. His first pitch went to the backstop, allowing Shane Victorino and Howard to advance and setting up Burrell's go-ahead hit down the left-field line.

"It's tough to cover four innings against a lineup like that," Gonzalez said.

Moyer (6-3) allowed seven hits in seven innings, won his fourth straight start and improved to 8-0 in eight career starts against Florida. Brad Lidge got three outs for his 13th save in 13 opportunities.

"I made a few bad pitches and Jacobs hit two of them out," Moyer said. "It's about location for me and I missed my spots. I had one bad inning and we played some great defense behind me and that kept us in the game."

Utley hit a solo drive against Andrew Miller in the third to cut Florida's lead to 5-3.

Miller allowed three hits and three runs -- two earned -- in five innings. He walked four and struck out one.

"Utley is just swinging so well right now," Miller said. "I didn't know what to throw him."

Notes

  • Jenkins' last pinch-hit homer was for Milwaukee at Houston on Sept. 18, 2007.
  • The Phillies have a major league-best five pinch-hit homers this season.
  • It was Jacobs' third career multihomer game and second this season, April 9 at Washington.
  • Victorino extended his hitting streak to 13 with a single in the seventh. He's hitting .411 (23-for-56) during the streak.
  • Moyer won his 236th career game, tying him with Whitey Ford for 57th place on the career wins list.
  • The crowd of 45,312 was the largest of the season and the 13th sellout. It was the fifth-largest crowd in the history of Citizens Bank Park, dating to 2004.
