Padres 8, Phillies 2 wire reports

PHILADELPHIA -- Andrew Cashner enjoyed pitching with the lead for a change.

Jedd Gyorko and Chase Headley had three hits apiece to back Cashner's strong outing in the San Diego Padres' 8-2 victory against the Philadelphia Phillies on Tuesday night.

"It was huge -- they got me a run from the very get-go," Cashner said. "The guys swung the bat well tonight. The guys played solid defense behind me."

Cashner (9-8) earned his first victory since Aug. 2, throwing 7 2/3 masterful innings while limiting the Phillies to four hits and a walk. He matched a season high with seven strikeouts and retired his first 11 batters before giving up a double to Chase Utley.

"Really efficient early in the game, pounded the strike zone with the fastball and slider," Padres manager Bud Black said. "I thought it was an outstanding game by Cash, in control right from the start."

Cashner had allowed just one run in his previous two outings but did not get a decision in either one. He owns a 2.72 ERA since the All-Star break, with quality starts in eight of nine outings.

"I feel stronger than I was at the beginning of the year," Cashner said. "In the beginning of the year, I was coming off thumb surgery. I felt like I was just trying to stay healthy. But I felt like once the All-Star break hit, it was lay it all down on the line and let's go."

Gyorko, who entered in a 3-for-28 slide, scored three runs and drove in another. Headley added two RBI for the Padres, who have won four straight and six of seven.

Philadelphia had won three in a row.

The Padres, who had 13 hits, struck early with Headley's RBI single in the first inning. They added three runs in the fourth on an RBI double by Ronny Cedeno and a two-run double by Rene Rivera.

In the fifth, San Diego scored four runs on six singles, including five in a row to open the inning. Six hits in one inning tied a season high.

Cedeno and Kyle Blanks finished with two hits apiece.

"I was leaving pitches up and made a lot of mistakes," Phillies starter Tyler Cloyd said. "My pitches were getting a lot of the plate. ... I got off the game plan and didn't throw enough off-speed pitches."

Cloyd (2-4) was not sharp in his first major-league start in three weeks. The right-hander allowed seven runs and nine hits over four-plus innings. He struck out four and walked none.

Zach Miner, who relieved Cloyd in the fifth, let two inherited runners score and yielded three hits and a run overall. Ethan Martin pitched a perfect sixth in his first appearance as a reliever.

"I thought our plan was good against Cloyd," Black said. "I thought our guys kept the momentum going. Hitting is a little bit contagious, and I think that was the case tonight."

Cody Asche hit his fifth home run in the fifth inning for the Phillies' first run. The home run was Asche's third in six games.

In his big-league debut, catcher Cameron Rupp legged out an infield single and struck out twice for Philadelphia.

"The plate umpire [Mark Wegner] came over and said that's the best visibility he's seen all year and the best framing of pitches," Phillies interim manager Ryne Sandberg said of Rupp. "That's a big compliment and very unusual to hear."

Before the game, the Padres selected the contract of infielder Tommy Medica from Double-A San Antonio. ... Phillies RHP Roy Halladay, originally scheduled to pitch Tuesday, will instead start Thursday after experiencing flulike symptoms last weekend. ... MLB's 2014 schedule was released on Tuesday. The Padres will host the Los Angeles Dodgers on opening day, while the Phillies will open the season at Texas. ... Padres closer Huston Street was selected NL player of the week Monday after earning four saves and a victory. ... Cliff Lee (12-6, 3.01 ERA) pitches Wednesday for the Phillies against Eric Stults (8-13, 4.07).
