On Tuesday, Mets GM Sandy Alderson appeared on Mike Francesa's show on WFAN and said injured ace Matt Harvey will likely soon receive a second opinion on his partially torn UCL -- possibly from Dr. James Andrews -- and decide whether to undergo Tommy John surgery "within the next week or two." More from Alderson:

"If he doesn’t have it, it becomes a sort of ongoing proposition because at any point in his rehab there could be a set back, and that would be all the way up until he starts throwing completely in spring training."

You can parse that a number of ways, but that sounds like a GM who would prefer his player to undergo the procedure and get the healing process underway. Harvey, though, has previously indicated he'd like to be ready by opening day 2014, which would obviously not be possible in the event of Tommy John. Alderson went on to say to Francesa that "realistically" the final decision on whether to undergo surgery or attempt non-surgical rehab will be Harvey's.

Harvey, of course, was recently shut down for the balance of the 2013 season -- a season that saw the 24-year-old pitch to a stellar 2.27 ERA (158 ERA+), 0.93 WHIP and 6.16 K/BB ratio across 26 starts.
