The baseball world got to breathe a collective sigh of relief after the Angels game on Sunday, because Mike Trout suffered only a thumb contusion after this pitch:

Broken bones happen often when players are hit in the thumb/hand/wrist area by pitches, notably those of more than 90 miles per hour, as was the case with Indians' reliever Tommy Hunter's errant heater above.

"I'm just glad it's not broken," Trout said (angels.com). "When you're hit in the hand or you're hit in the finger, it's a scary thing."

The Angels aren't a strong contender, sitting 12 out in the AL West and seven back from the second wild card spot, but Mike Trout is the face of baseball. Plus, with the All-Star Game just about a month away, a broken thumb surely would have meant that baseball's biggest star would miss the Midsummer Classic.

Instead, problem averted.

Trout, 24, is hitting .309/.415/.543 with 13 doubles, 13 homers, 44 RBI, 43 runs and nine steals this season.

The Indians won the game, 8-3, to maintain a three-game lead in the AL Central.
