A's drop protest of Thursday night's game
The A's have decided to drop their protest of the controversial call from Thursday night's loss to the Angels due to it being a judgment call.
Assistant general manager David Forst told me that he, general manager Billy Beane and manager Bob Melvin spoke this morning, “and we ultimately agreed that it was a judgment call, as (crew chief) Gerry Davis said last night.”
Here's the play in question:
And now the rule (Rule 2.00):
As the A's brass ultimately decided, that is a judgment call. Even if you believe it was the incorrect call (I mean, I'm not sure what is considered "in the act of fielding the ball" if that isn't), it wasn't a problem of misapplying a rule, so MLB was unlikely to uphold this protest.
So the Angels' win stands and they hold a two-game lead in the AL West with three games to go in this weekend series.
