A's scratch Jarrod Parker, Yoenis Cespedes from Sunday's game
Some minor injuries will keep Jarrod Parker and Yoenis Cespedes off the field on Sunday.
The Athletics have scratched right-hander Jarrod Parker (illness) and outfielder Yoenis Cespedes (sore right shoulder) from Sunday's series finale against the Rangers. Tommy Milone will start on the mound and Nate Freiman will step into the lineup.
Parker, 24, is "getting better" according to manager Bob Melvin, but the team decided to play it safe. He had been throwing up all morning. In 29 starts this year, Parker has gone 11-6 with a 3.55 ERA (104 ERA+) and a 1.20 WHIP in a career-high 182 1/3 innings.
Cespedes, 27, apparently hurt his shoulder diving for a ball in the outfield the other day. He has hit .241/.299/.439 (107 OPS+) with 23 home runs in 126 games this season. Cespedes has been on fire this month, going 19-for-51 (.373) with three homers and 13 RBI in 13 games.
The 26-year-old Milone has gone 10-9 with a 4.31 ERA (86 ERA+) in 144 innings across 24 starts (and one relief appearance). Freiman, 26, hit .284/.335/.404 (110 OPS+) in 77 games as a part-time player this season.
The A's have won the first two games of their three-game series against the Rangers, increasing their least in the AL West to 5.5 games. They've won 15 of their last 19 games overall.
