Blood clot forces Jason Vargas to disabled list
Angels left-hander Jason Vargas has been placed on the DL with a blood clot in his left armpit. He had been one of their few reliable pitchers.
The Angels have placed starting pitcher Jason Vargas on the 15-day disabled list -- retroactive to June 18 -- due to a blood clot in his left armpit area, the club announced Friday. As a corresponding move, Billy Buckner has been recalled from Triple-A Salt Lake.
Vargas, 30, has been one of the few reliable pitchers for the Angels this season. He's 6-4 with a 3.65 ERA and 1.36 WHIP in 91 1/3 innings in his first season with Los Angeles. He was acquired last winter from Seattle in a trade for Kendrys Morales. In his last seven starts, however, Vargas is 5-1 with a 3.06 ERA.
No information was given as to a possible return date for Vargas.
Buckner, 29, made a spot start earlier this season for the Angels, picking up the win against the Royals after throwing five shutout innings and allowing only two hits. He's 6-2 with a 4.50 ERA, 1.49 WHIP and 61 strikeouts in 72 innings for Salt Lake this year.
