Blue Jays activate Brett Lawrie off the 15-day DL
The Blue Jays are getting their regular third baseman back on Saturday after activating Brett Lawrie off the 15-day DL.
Lawrie, 23, missed a little less than two months with a left ankle sprain. He went 8-for-32 (.250) with one home run in 10 minor-league rehab games before being activated. A ribcage injury caused him to start the season on the DL.
In 37 games between the ribcage and ankle injuries, Lawrie hit .209/.268/.374 (72 OPS+) with five home runs. He hit .273/.324/.405 (96 OPS+) in 125 games last year, his first full season in the big leagues. He has been on the DL four times since making his MLB debut in August 2011, in part because of his all-out (and occasionally out of control) style of play.
Kawasaki, 32, hit .213/.319/.298 (70 OPS+) in 70 games for the Blue Jays this year. He took over as the regular shortstop when Jose Reyes was on the DL with his ankle injury. Kawasaki quickly became a fan favorite for his energetic play and quirky interviews.
At 44-48, the Blue Jays sit in last place in the AL East. They are eight games out of a wild-card spot.
