Brandon Phillips leaves game with sprained left thumb
Reds second baseman Brandon Phillips injured his left thumb Wednesday and had to leave the game.
Reds second baseman Brandon Phillips left Wednesday night's win over the Cubs in the eighth inning with what appeared to be a left wrist injury, at the time. He made a diving stop of an eventual Anthony Rizzo single and his entire glove hand rolled underneath him awkwardly as he tried to spin and make the throw. He appeared to be holding his wrist while athletic trainers checked it out.
After the game, though, the Reds announced that the injury was actually a sprained left thumb. X-rays were taken and came back negative, but otherwise there's no word on the severity of the issue.
The Reds went on to win their fifth straight game.
Phillips, 33, is hitting .272/.308/.392 with seven homers and 40 RBI this season.
