The season is over for Braves' Double-A affiliate Mississippi, so now the Braves have called up catching prospect Christian Bethancourt, per the team's official website.

Bethancourt, 22, hit .277/.305/.436 with 21 doubles, 12 homers, 45 RBI and 11 stolen bases in 90 games for Mississippi this season. He's known as a good defensive catcher with a strong arm. He threw out 32 of 100 attempted base-stealers this season.

Baseball American ranked Bethancourt as the 91st best prospect in baseball prior to last season, but his stock has fallen slightly since.

Bethancourt obviously won't leapfrog either Brian McCann or Evan Gattis this season, but he'll surely gain some valuable experience. Also note that McCann is a free agent after the season and it appears likely the Braves will let him walk. So some combination of Bethancourt and Gattis could head into next season taking the catching duties.
