Brian McCann, Sergio Romo among All-Star replacements
The AL and NL All-Star rosters have dropped and added a few names in advance of Tuesday's Midsummer Classic.
As is usually the case around this time, AL and NL All-Star rosters are undergoing some minor changes because of injury and the way that various rotations have slotted heading into the break. On Sunday, MLB announced the following alterations ...
Inactive on AL roster: Bartolo Colon , SP, Oakland Athletics (Sunday starter); Hisashi Iwakuma , SP, Seattle Mariners (Sunday starter); Justin Verlander , SP, Detroit Tigers (Sunday starter).
Added to AL roster: Grant Balfour , RP, Athletics; Greg Holland , RP, Kansas City Royals ; Chris Tillman , SP, Baltimore Orioles .
Inactive on NL roster: Freddie Freeman , 1B, Atlanta Braves (thumb injury); Jeff Locke , SP, Pittsburgh Pirates (back tightness); Jordan Zimmermann , SP, Washington Nationals (neck discomfort).
Added to NL roster: Brian McCann , C, Braves; Mark Melancon , RP, Pirates; Sergio Romo , RP, San Francisco Giants
McCann makes the All-Star team for the seventh time. In essence, McCann takes the roster spot of teammate Freeman, who prevailed in the NL "Final Vote" over Yasiel Puig of the Los Angeles Dodgers . The presence of a third catcher on the roster means NL manager Bruce Bochy won't have to lean so heavily on Yadier Molina of the St. Louis Cardinals , who has had recent knee problems, and Buster Posey of Bochy's own Giants.
Elsewhere, it's hard to understand why Jim Leyland chose Tillman and his 3.95 ERA over Hiroki Kuroda of the New York Yankees and his ERA of 2.65. Presumably, Leyland was eyeballing Tillman's 11 wins, but Kuroda has far and away been the better pitcher this season.
Note that, with Adam Wainwright slated to start for the Cardinals on Sunday night, an additional chance for the NL is likely in the offing.
