Cardinals calling up top infield prospect Kolten Wong
The Cardinals will bolster their infield for the stretch run with prospect Kolten Wong. He'll join the team tomorrow after being called up.
The Cardinals are calling up top infield prospect Kolten Wong, the team announced. He will join the club in Chicago on Friday for their series opener against the Cubs.
Wong, 22, hit .303/.369/.466 with 10 home runs and 20 stolen bases in 107 games for Triple-A Memphis this year. He's a career .301/.365/.446 hitter in 280 minor league games after being the 22nd overall pick in the 2011 draft.
Baseball America ranked Wong as the 84th best prospect in the game before the season. They said he "springs from a compact stance to deliver consistent sharp contact" and "has surprising power for his size" in their 2013 Prospect Handbook.
Wong has played second base exclusively as a pro, so it will be interesting to see how the Cardinals utilize him. Matt Carpenter has been fantastic (136 OPS+) during his first year at second, but his versatility could land him at a different position.
