Cardinals place right-hander Joe Kelly on DL with hamstring strain
The Cardinals' rotation depth will be in for a test, as Joe Kelly has been placed on the DL.
Pursuant to Wednesday night's injury, the Cardinals have placed right-hander and rotation member Joe Kelly on the 15-day DL with a left hamstring strain. Kelly suffered the injury while trying to leg out a bunt during his most recent start against the Brewers.
At the same time, the Cardinals optioned right-hander Keith Butler to Triple-A Memphis and recalled right-handers Eric Fornataro and Jorge Rondon.
As for Kelly's time-table, it's not certain yet, though it's of course worth noting that hamstring strains sometimes require longer than the minimum DL stay.
The Cardinals are in the midst of playing 20 straight games without an off day, so they'll need a fifth starter in the coming days. It seems likely that lefty Tyler Lyons might get the call to take Kelly's turn next time, but nothing's been decided just yet.
