CBSSports.com Insider Danny Knobler reports that the Cardinals have signed lefty reliever Randy Choate. Fellow Insider Jon Heyman tabs the deal at $7.5 million over three seasons.
Last season, the now-37-year-old Choate posted a 3.03 ERA in a total of 38 2/3 innings for the Marlins and Dodgers. In parts of 12 major-league seasons, Choate has a career ERA of 4.02. While that mark isn't impressive for a reliever, he has limited same-side hitters to a career line of .201/.278/.284, so as long as he's kept in a specialist's role he can be very effective.
Choate joins Mark Rzepcyznski as the lone lefties presently in the St. Louis pen.
