Cole Hamels, 3 relievers combine to no-hit Braves
Phillies ace Cole Hamels came within nine outs of no-hitting the Braves in Atlanta, but he wound up being lifted for a pinch-hitter. The bullpen finished the job for him.
Four Phillies pitchers combined to no-hit the Braves on Monday (PHI 7, ATL 0).
Lefty Cole Hamels worked six hitless innings in Atlanta, but was lifted for a pinch-hitter in the seventh, likely because of the heat and a rising pitch count. From there, the Phillies' bullpen finished the job and secured just the 11th combined no-hitter in MLB history. Here's the final out ...
On the day, Hamels struck out seven and walked five with one hit batsman. Of his 108 pitches, 66 went for strikes. Reliever Jake Diekman worked a hitless seventh, and Ken Giles and Jonathan Papelbon did the same in the eighth and ninth, respectively.
It was the first combined no-hitter since 2012, when Kevin Millwood and five Mariners relievers no-hit the Astros. It was the 12th Phillies no-hitter of all-time and the first since Roy Halladay's in the 2010 NLDS. This marks the first time the Braves were no-hit since Ubaldo Jimenez of the Rockies achieved the feat, also in 2010.
Regarding Millwood and Hamels, there's this ...

Worth noting: Hamels himself had a hit in this game.
After his effort on Labor Day, Hamels this season now has a career-best 2.50 ERA in 25 starts.
NOTE: I originally wrote that Hamels had been removed because of a groin injury. That was incorrect.
