Countdown to a Pirates winning season: Four more victories
It's time once again to resume the countdown to Pirates' win number 82. They'd have to go 3-25 the rest of the season in order to not get there.
As the Pirates look to break the longest winning-record drought in professional sports history, we're counting down with every victory. And after the Pirates throttled the Cardinals Friday night behind the bat of Garrett Jones and arm of Francisco Liriano, we're here once again to put up the lower number.
And here it is:

That would be the retired number of Hall of Famer and Pirates legend Ralph Kiner, showing that these Pirates are now just four wins away from their first winning season since 1992, when Jose Lind and Jay Bell comprised the double-play combination.
As I've noted previously, we're in formality territory with this countdown. The Pirates would have to lose 25 of their last 28 games in order to not have a winning record. So it's over. Instead, the focus of the club and the city of Pittsburgh is on the NL Central title, where they are now tied for first with the Cardinals.
