Countdown to a Pirates winning season: Two more victories
For the first time since 1992, the Pirates have won 80 games in a season.
The Pirates are on the verge of breaking the longest losing season streak in professional sports history. They beat the Brewers by the score of 5-2 on Monday thanks to a three-run homer from Neil Walker, moving their record to 80-57. It is the first time they've won as many as 80 games in a season since going 96-66 in 1992.
With the win, Pittsburgh needs to go just 2-23 in their final 25 games to secure the winning season that has eluded them for two decades. It's time to hang another number on the countdown:
Jack Wilson spent parts of nine seasons with the Pirates at the turn of the century and was part of the long, long rebuilding process. He was a solid defensive-minded player for the better part of a decade for this team.
That 80th win surely feels good to the Pittsburgh faithful, but you know what? The Pirates also took back sole possession of first place with Monday's win. They're a game up on the Cardinals. That's more important.
