Cubs OF Ryan Sweeney fractures rib, out 4-6 weeks
Cubs outfielder Ryan Sweeney ran into the wall in Safeco Field Saturday night, and now he's going to miss four to six weeks with a broken rib.
Cubs outfielder Ryan Sweeney was in the middle of a breakout season, but he's now going to miss four to six weeks due to a fractured rib, the Cubs told reporters Sunday (Carrie Muskat of MLB.com). He injured the rib when he ran into the outfield wall in Safeco Field Saturday.
Sweeney had taken over everyday duty in center field after David DeJesus hit the DL -- coincidentally, also due to a wall confrontation -- and was performing extremely well. In 121 plate appearances, Sweeney is hitting .295/.342/.527 with 10 doubles, two triples, four homers and 15 RBI. He's even been slotted as the Cubs' cleanup hitter on a few occasions.
Sweeney, 28, was once a highly-touted prospect but hasn't really panned out. It's possible that was finally coming to fruition, but instead the broken rib has derailed him, even if only temporarily.
Another layer here is that Sweeney may have been a fourth outfielder-type pickup at the trade deadline for a contender.
As for the Cubs, Julio Borbon and Brian Bogusevic seem likely to get most of the time in center until DeJesus and/or Sweeney return.
