Dislocated thumb lands Rays' Ben Zobrist on DL
A day after injuring his thumb in a head-first slide, Rays second baseman Ben Zobrist has hit the 15-day DL.
On Wednesday, Rays second baseman Ben Zobrist dislocated his left thumb in the course of sliding head-first into second base. On Thursday, the Rays placed Zobrist on the 15-day disabled list. As Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times tweets, Zobrist may need longer than the mininum 15 days to fully heal.
This season, the 32-year-old Zobrist is batting .260/.352/.364 in 180 plate appearances. For his career, he owns an OPS+ of 116 across parts of nine major-league seasons. Over the course of that career, Zobrist has logged significant time at every position but catcher. He's eligible for free agency next offseason.
