Draft pick Sean Manaea signs with Royals, headed for hip surgery
Indiana State left-hander Sean Manaea signed a record-setting deal with the Royals on Friday. Now he'll undergo minor hip surgery.
On Friday, the Royals signed Sean Manaea, Indiana State left-hander and 34th-overall pick in the recent MLB draft, to a $3.55 million signing bonus. That's a record for a supplemental-round choice and, as CBSSports.com's Jon Heyman points out, the highest dollar amount above draft slot for any 2013 signee.
Here's more from Heyman on Manaea:
Sean Manaea will have hip surgery monday. Has small labrum tear. Shoulder a non issue. Signed w/ #royals today for $3.55M— Jon Heyman (@JonHeymanCBS) June 21, 2013
Manaea was regarded as one of the top draft-eligible talents coming into 2013, but an inconsistent and injury-compromised junior season caused him to fall. The Royals, obviously, see the guy who lit up radar guns in the Cape Cod League last year, and they've paid him accordingly.
