Erick Aybar said he's tried twice to get in touch with Oakland Athletics pitcher Brandon McCarthy, but has been unable to talk to him. Aybar hit the line drive that hit McCarthy in the head on Wednesday, requiring emergency surgery.

According to the Orange County Register, Aybar left messages on McCarthy's cell phone after Wednesday's game and again on Thursday.

Aybar released a statement through the team on Friday:

"It has been a tough last two days for me as I keep replaying in my head when the ball struck Brandon. I am encouraged and thankful to know he has made significant progress, and I keep praying to God to help him recover quickly and fully. I also pray for he and his wife. Our game is a tight brotherhood, and right now we all wear the same uniform colors."

Although there was no intent by Aybar, you know he must just feel awful. It's sad, and Aybar shouldn't feel responsible, but he probably will anyway. As always, our thoughts and best wishes go out to McCarthy, but also to Aybar.
