Farrell invites Gardenhire, Francona to join All-Star coaching staff
Red Sox skipper John Farrell is planning to invite Terry Francona and Ron Gardenhire to join him on the AL All-Star coaching staff.
One of the perks of winning the World Series is getting to manage in the All-Star Game the following season. As such, Red Sox skipper John Farrell and his coaching staff will be at the helm of the American League squad this July.
“It’s just an honor that our coaches and myself have a chance to be around the game’s current greatest players. It’s an honor for us,” said Farrell to WEEI.com's Rob Bradford. “It’s a meaningful game. and to be associated with the spectacle of a Midsummer Classic is something that we’ll always remember and for a couple of us, this is the second time we’ve been fortunate enough to be part of it. and it will get here in time, but we’re looking forward to those days.”
Farrell also told Bradford he is planning to invite Indians manager Terry Francona and Twins manager Ron Gardenhire to join his coaching staff for the Midsummer Classic. Farrell was Francona's pitching coach with the Red Sox for several years and the two are long-time friends. It's no surprise he's receiving an invite.
The Twins are hosting the All-Star Game at Target Field this summer, and inviting the hometown manager to join the coaching staff is a tradition, hence Gardenhire's invite.
There is no word on who Cardinals manager Mike Matheny will invite on the National League side yet.
