George Kontos suspended 3 games, Bruce Bochy 1 for hit batsman
After both benches were warned Tuesday night, George Kontos hit Andrew McCutchen with a pitch. So he's been suspended along with his manager.
Giants reliever George Kontos has been suspended for three games after hitting Andrew McCutchen with a pitch in the backside Tuesday night (MLB.com has the video) in the Pirates' 8-2 victory over San Francisco.
The hit-by-pitch came in the eighth inning after both benches had been warned by the umpiring crew and Kontos coughed up a two-run homer to Pedro Alvarez in the previous frame.
Since both benches had been warned, Giants manager Bruce Bochy was ejected along with Kontos -- and this is also why Bochy has been hit with a one-game suspension of his own.
Major League Baseball announced the suspensions Wednesday afternoon.
Kontos, 28, has a 5.76 ERA, 1.45 WHIP and 28 strikeouts in 29 2/3 innings this season. He's allowed seven of the 24 baserunners he's inherited to score.
In an odd twist of circumstances, the Giants optioned Kontos to Triple-A Wednesday afternoon. Oh, and it's his birthday -- probably his roughest one in a while.
