Giants place lefty Jeremy Affeldt on 15-day DL with groin injury
The Giants have lost lefty setup man Jeremy Affeldt to a left-groin injury.
The Giants have placed left-handed setup man Jeremy Affedlt on the 15-day DL with a left-groin injury. Right-hander Jean Machi was recalled from Triple-A Fresno to fill the roster spot.
Affedlt, 34, left Saturday night's game with the groin problem. He has a 3.51 ERA with a 1.26 WHIP in 33 1/3 innings overall this year, but he's been spectacular against lefty batters -- Affeldt has held same-side hitters to a .167/.270/.204 (50 OPS+) batting line this season.
Machi, 31, has a 3.58 ERA with 24 strikeouts and just five walks in 27 2/3 innings for San Francisco this season. He's been up and down between Triple-A and the big leagues a few times. Machi reached MLB for the first time with the Giants last year after bouncing around the minors for more than a decade.
San Francisco has won five of its last six games to erase two games off its NL West deficit. The Giants sit in fourth place in the division but are only 4 1/2 games back of the Diamondbacks.
Manager Bruce Bochy indicated the team could look for bullpen help at the trade deadline even before Affeldt's injury.
