Giants to place reliever Jeremy Affeldt on disabled list
Giants lefty reliever Jeremy Affeldt is headed for the DL with a strained oblique.
The Giants will soon place lefty reliever Jeremy Affeldt on the 15-day disabled list with a strained right oblique, reports Alex Pavlovic of the San Jose Mercury News. A Tuesday MRI revealed the injury.
Manager Bruce Bochy says he doesn't know how long Affeldt will be sidelined, but, as Pavlovic notes, a similar injury in 2004 laid up Affeldt for almost two months.
To replace Affeldt on the active roster, the Giants will recall right-hander Jean Machi from Triple-A. Even so, the Giants will still have a pair of left-handers -- Jose Mijares and Javier Lopez -- in the bullpen.
This season, Affeldt, who's in the first year of a three-year, $18-million contract, has a 5.79 ERA in six appearances. For his career, Affeldt has pitched to a 111 ERA+, 1.42 WHIP and 1.80 K/BB ratio. He owns an ERA of 2.79 since coming to the Giants before the 2009 season.
