GIF: Shane Victorino's great catch from a great angle
Boston's Shane Victorino made a pretty nifty catch on Sunday. Here's what it looked like from the bird's-eye view.
Jose Reyes of the Blue Jays led off the inning with a sinking humpback liner to right. Victorino charged hard but found himself in dangerous proximity to the wall in foul territory. Now check out his instincts from a certifiably cool overhead camera angle.
This has always struck me as one of the most difficult plays to make. The looming threat of the wall, the somewhat unpredictable sink on the ball, the transition to the slide, the tailing action on the ball at the very last instant -- it's a tough, tough grab.
It was also clutch, as the next batter up, Jose Bautista, launched a game-tying homer. If Victorino doesn't make this play (note that it's in fair territory), then the hasty Reyes is at least on second standing up. Maybe that leads to an IBB for Bautista, but the inning could have been much worse for the hosts if Victorino doesn't come through here.
Eventually, the Sox prevailed in the home half, as Victorino reached on an error, which allowed the winning run to score with one out.
