GIFs: Dustin Pedroia leaves game after taking elbow to head
Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia took a shot to the face courtesy of the Rays' Logan Forsythe and was forced to leave Saturday night's game.
And here's another angle:
In the second view, it looked as though Forsythe was moving his arm out of the way so as to avoid the forthcoming tag (it was a tag-up play on a deep fly to center fielder Mookie Betts), so the working assumption is that it was nothing intentional. It did look pretty ugly, however, and you of course worry about a potential concussion in a situation like this. Pedroia exited the game immediately thereafter and was replaced at second by Brock Holt.
Forsythe told the Assoicated Press the contact was not intentional.
''The only move that I made was to try to swim-move the tag to get out of the way,'' Forsythe said.
Also from the AP, Red Sox manager John Farrell said Pedroia was dizzy after the play but improved later.
This season, Pedroia, 31, is batting .281/.341/.380 (103 OPS+) with 32 doubles in 130 games.
