Javier Vazquez out of WBC, unlikely to pitch in 2013
Semi-retired right-hander Javier Vazquez has pulled out of the World Baseball Classic and isn't expected to pitch in 2013.
Veteran right-hander Javier Vazquez, who's semi-retired these days, had been on Puerto Rico's provisional roster for the upcoming World Baseball Classic. However, because of discomfort stemming from offseason knee surgery, Vazquez will not be able to pitch in the WBC, reports Ruben Rodriguez. It's also likely Vazquez, contrary to "soft speculation," won't be in line for a return to the majors in 2013.
If this is the end for the 36-year-old Vazquez, he'll end his major-league career with some solid numbers: 165 wins; 105 ERA+; 2,536 strikeouts (good for 29th place on the all-time list) and a 3.32 K/BB ratio (good for 26th place on the all-time list).
As for Puerto Rico, its most notable remaining pitchers are likely Nelson Figueroa and J.C. Romero.
