Joe Girardi: A-Rod will be in Yanks' lineup Monday night if activated
With D-Day for Major League Baseball's Biogenesis suspensions at hand, who knows whether Alex Rodriguez will show up in Chicago, walk into the Yankees clubhouse or even dress in a Yanks uniform Monday in Chicago. But Joe Girardi says if A-Rod is on the team, he will start that night against the Cubs. ...
SAN DIEGO -- Manager Joe Girardi said here Sunday morning that if Alex Rodriguez makes it to Chicago and is activated, he will be in the Yankees lineup for that night’s series opener against the White Sox.
“Yeah,” Girardi said. “I’m not going to bring him up and sit him.”
Most of the questions were about the swirling controversy surrounding the embattled star as the Yankees prepared for their series finale in San Diego.
“I think all of us are curious as to what’s going to happen,” Girardi said. “Is Alex going to be a player for us tomorrow, what’s going to happen with the other guys.
“In my mind, I have him penciled in tomorrow.”
Pencil, someone joked. Not pen?
Girardi chuckled and pointed out that it’s just an expression. Besides, he said, pencil, pen, most people type today, anyway.
The manager said he talked with Rodriguez on Saturday night, and Rodriguez joked that he didn’t get any pitches to hit in Saturday’s injury-rehabilitation game for Double-A Trenton. Later, though, Girardi was more specific: He texted with A-Rod. It wasn’t an actual human conversation.
“I know he’s anxious to get there,” Girardi said, referring to Chicago.
He also said that he does not think the clubhouse atmosphere will turn awkward if Rodriguez suddenly is pulling on a Yankees uniform roughly 24 hours from now.
“I don’t suspect it will be awkward,” Girardi said. “The guys know him as a teammate. They’ve been around Alex, laughed with him.
“I suspect it will be business as usual. There will be more media, but that’s for Alex, not for the rest of the team.”
