Jonathan Sanchez makes Pirates' rotation
Veteran lefty Jonathan Sanchez has secured a spot among Pittsburgh's starting five. What can they reasonably expect from him?
The 30-year-old Sanchez, who was signed to a minor-league contract, is coming off a season in which he posted an ERA of 8.07 (!) across 15 starts for the Rockies and Royals. For his career, Sanchez owns an ERA+ of 92 and a 1.45 WHIP and 1.82 K/BB ratio in 772 2/3 innings. He was a very effective starter as recently as 2010, and in 2009 he threw a no-hitter as a member of the Giants. This spring, Sanchez has pitched to a 4.73 ERA in six games, three of which have been starts.
According to the projection systems available at FanGraphs, Sanchez's 2013 ERA is forecasted to range between 4.25 and 4.75. So while he's not expected to be particularly good, he shouldn't be as disastrous as he was in 2012.
