CBSSports.com Insider Jon Heyman reports that the Red Sox have placed right-hander Josh Beckett on waivers. However, rival execs don't expect Beckett to be traded, in large part because of his contract, which runs through to 2014 at a cost of $15.75 million for each of the next two seasons.

Heyman characterizes the Dodgers as "the wild card" in all of this but says that any deal for Beckett remains a long shot.

On the season, the 32-year-old Beckett has a 5.23 ERA and 94 strikeouts in 127.1 innings pitched. In parts of 12 major-league seasons, he has a career ERA of 3.93. The three-time All-Star finished second in the AL Cy Young Award voting in 2007.
