J.P. Arencibia pitches and Rangers close in on unfortunate record
Catcher J.P. Arencibia pitched for the Rangers in a blowout loss to the Rays on Wednesday. As it turns out, the Rangers have used a lot of pitchers this season.
The Rays battered the Rangers by a score of 10-1 on Wednesday night, and at one point the Rangers were so desperate as to warm up catcher J.P. Arencibia. That's when Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News tweeted the following:
If Arencibia pitches, #Rangers will be up to 35 pitchers, 2 shy of most pitchers ever used by a club (2002, Padres).— Evan Grant (@Evan_P_Grant) August 14, 2014
Sure enough, this happened soon thereafter ...
Bold statement: Using 35 pitchers in a season is not typically coincident with team success. So it is with the 2014 Rangers, potential record-holders.
