More All-Star Game: Full rosters | Final Vote candidates | Which pitchers will start?
With the Blue Jays having placed Edwin Encarnacion on the 15-day disabled list, he's now ineligible to play in the All-Star Game, despite having been named to the team Sunday night. So the American League needed to name a replacement, and it has in the form of Mariners third baseman Kyle Seager.
Seager, 26, is hitting .274/.347/.483 (135 OPS+) with 21 doubles, 13 homers, 59 RBI and 36 runs for the 48-40 Mariners. He's an excellent defender, too, so this is a very solid addition by the AL.
This will be the first All-Star Game for Seager, who joins Felix Hernandez and Robinson Cano to give the Mariners three All-Star representatives. Surprisingly, it hasn't been that long since they sent three. In 2011, they were represented by Hernandez, Michael Pineda and Brandon League.
