Mariano Rivera progressing toward deal with Yankees

The alltime great closer is expected to sign a deal for 2013 that's also above $10 million, like his longtime teammate Andy Pettitte.

The Yankees and Mariano Rivera are progressing toward a deal that's expected to be finalized by the end of the week, sources said.

Rivera is expected to receive a deal in the range of the one Andy Pettitte's about to sign with the Yankees, somewhere around $11 million, though the numbers aren't final yet. Rivera made $15 million last year.

Rivera told Yankees GM Brian Cashman a few weeks ago he intended to return. He missed most of 2012 after suffering a freak knee injury while shagging flyballs in Kansas City.

The alltime great closer was 1-1 with a 2.16 ERA before getting hurt last year, and spent the year rehabbing. He'll return with a lifetime WHIP of 1.00 (technically just below, at 0.998). He is 76-58 with a 2.21 ERA and a record 608 saves.
