Brewers manager Ron Roenicke told reporters on Monday that first baseman Mat Gamel will miss the season due to a knee injury. He recently aggravated his surgically repaired right knee during batting practice.
Gamel, 27, played only 21 games last year before tearing his ACL and needing season-ending surgery. He's hit .229/.305/.367 with six homers in 106 career big league games spread across five seasons. Gamel was slated to serve as the team's everyday first baseman following Corey Hart's recent knee surgery.
The Brewers don't have a ton of first-base depth, so it will be interesting to see how they fill the hole until Hart returns in late April/May. They could use infielder Taylor Green there with Alex Gonzalez taking over utility infielder duties, or they could sign a stopgap like Aubrey Huff or former Brewer Carlos Lee.
