Matt Wieters to test elbow Friday for first time since being shut down
Orioles catcher Matt Wieters will play catch to test his injured elbow on Friday.
Orioles catcher Matt Wieters will play a light game of catch on Friday, according to MLB.com's Britt Ghiroli. It will be the first time he tests his injured elbow since being shut down three weeks ago.
Wieters, 28, is currently on the disabled list with a sprained ligament in his elbow. It was feared he would need Tommy John surgery at one point, but Dr. James Andrews determined that was unnecessary. That doesn't mean he won't miss an extended period of time, however.
In 26 games before getting hurt, Wieters hit .308/.339/.500 (130 OPS+) with five doubles and five home runs. He reportedly played with pain in the elbow since very early in the season.
The Orioles acquired catcher Nick Hundley from the Padres a few days ago to add depth with Wieters on the shelf.
