The Mets have placed ace Dillon Gee on the 15-day disabled list with a strained right lat, the team announced. The move is retroactive to May 11.

Gee, 28, is 3-1 with a 2.73 ERA and a 1.06 WHIP in eight starts and 52 2/3 innings this season. Over the last calendar year, he is 13-8 with a 3.08 ERA in 216 innings. Gee has quietly become one of the better pitchers in baseball.

Right-hander Jacob deGrom will start in place of Gee on Thursday. He was called up earlier this week for long relief work and has yet to appear in a game.

With fellow righty Rafael Montero starting on Wednesday, the Mets will have pitchers make their MLB debut in back-to-back games.
