The Texas Rangers have brought back back free agent outfielder Carlos Gomez on a one-year deal worth $11.5 million, reports Jon Heyman of Fanrag.com.

With both Gomez and Ian Desmond being free agents, the Rangers were left with a need in center field heading into the offseason, so Gomez is a natural fit. A two-time All-Star, Gomez was terrible for the Astros in parts of 2015-16, but once catching on with the Rangers he bounced back.

In 33 games for the Rangers last season, Gomez hit .284/.362/.543 (134 OPS+) with six doubles, eight homers, 24 RBI, 18 runs and five steals. While he's clearly past his prime, Gomez isn't too old to be productive, as he only turned 31 a few days ago (Dec. 4).

Returning to All-Star form probably isn't a great bet, but it's possible Gomez ends up a very good solution as an everyday center fielder in this market, particularly since he had some success with the Rangers last year.

Gomez leading off with Shin-Soo Choo hitting second in front of the likes of Adrian Beltre, Rougned Odor and Jonathan Lucroy makes sense for a top of the order. The Rangers could still be in the market for a 1B/DH type as well, even if they don't seem likely to pay for a big gun like Edwin Encarnacion.

For now, Rangers general manager Jon Daniels has filled his hole in center and can move on to other roster matters.
