Fox Sports' Jon Morosi on Wednesday tweeted that the Rockies and Blue Jays have discussed a deal that would send right-hander Marcus Stroman to Colorado in exchange for outfielder Charlie Blackmon. Morosi adds this important qualifier ...

Yep, the Blue Jays understandably want more in order to part with Stroman.

Stroman, 25, owns an ERA+ of 105 and a K/BB ratio of 3.35 across parts of three big-league seasons in Toronto. He's coming off the first 200-inning season in his major-league career, and he's not eligible for free agency until after the 2020 season. He's eligible for salary arbitration this offseason.

As for Blackmon, he's 30 and coming off the best season of his career (130 OPS+ and 29 homers as a primary center fielder). Blackmon also boasts good speed on the bases and rarely hits into double plays. He's eligible for free agency following the 2018 season.

As you can see, Stroman is younger and is under team control for significantly longer than Blackmon is. While Blackmon may have more near-term value, Stroman's a more cost-effective addition, which is why the Jays reportedly want a sweetener or two.

As for Colorado, the recent signing of Ian Desmond may make Blackmon expendable, and the Rockies are always spoiling for pitching. Toronto, meantime, is faced with the likely free agent losses of Jose Bautista and Michael Saunders, so they have vacancies in the outfield.
