Mariners: Nick Franklin was shipped back to the minors after just 18 plate appearances.

INJURY UPDATES

A's: A.J. Griffin hasn't been able to throw for weeks and now he's getting a second opinion on his injured elbow. Also, Yoenis Cespedes exited Thursday's game with a left hamstring injury and will miss a few games (Susan Slusser).

Orioles: Manny Machado could actually make his long-awaited return next weekend (baltimoresun.com).

Padres: Chase Headley is DL-bound with another calf issue.

Red Sox: Shane Victorino returned to the lineup Thursday.

Mets: Before the game Thursday, manager Terry Collins said Daisuke Matsuzaka could be his closer. In the actual game, Dice-K was used in a save situation and converted.

Orioles: As far as the contract extension J.J. Hardy seeks? "There's nothing to discuss," he says (baltimoresun.com).

Rangers: Former long-time lefty reliever Darren Oliver has been hired as a special assistant to general manager Jon Daniels.

Yankees: The fittingly-named Michael Pineda was suspended for 10 games due to the pine tar incident.
