Another weekend of baseball is upon us. Before the games start on Saturday afternoon, here is a recap of Friday's news from around the league.
IF Chris Getz : Opted to retire instead of reporting to Triple-A after being designated for assignment by the Toronto Blue Jays . “I’ve enjoyed every minute that I’ve played and will always be passionate about the game. I’m starting a family, and I’m interested in other endeavors both inside and outside of the game," he said. (MLB Daily Dish)

St. Louis Cardinals : RHP David Aardsma did not exercise the opt-out clause in his contract. He could have elected free agency if the team did not place him on the active 25-man roster by Friday.
Miami Marlins : Have a minor league deal in place with IF Miguel Tejada . (Sun Sentinel)
Baltimore Orioles : Signed RHP Heath Bell to a minor league contract ... designated RHP Evan Meek for assignment, the team announced. RHP Brad Brach was called up in a corresponding move.
Cincinnati Reds : Designated LHP Jeff Francis for assignment, the team announced.
Kansas City Royals : Designated OF Justin Maxwell for assignment, the club announced. RHP Casey Coleman was recalled in a corresponding move.
Los Angeles Angels : OF Josh Hamilton (thumb) took batting practice on Thursday and could begin a minor league rehab assignment next week (Los Angeles Times) ... OF Kole Calhoun (ankle) started a minor league rehab assignment on Friday ... manager Mike Scioscia said LHP Sean Burnett (elbow) is getting "progressively better" and is close to being activated off the DL (MLB.com) ... 3B David Freese (finger) is scheduled to begin a minor league rehab assignment on Saturday. Blue Jays: An MRI showed no structural damage in RHP Sergio Santos ' elbow. He will be shut down for a week before he starts throwing again. (National Post)
Cardinals: RHP Jason Motte (Tommy John surgery) will throw on Saturday and be reevaluated. He could be activated off the DL as soon as Sunday. (Fox Sports Midwest)
Arizona Diamondbacks : An x-ray showed significant progress for OF Mark Trumbo 's fractured foot. The team still wants him to take is slow, however. (MLB.com)
Los Angeles Dodgers : LHP Hyun-Jin Ryu (shoulder) threw 75 pitches in an extended spring training game. He could return to the rotation next week. (MLB.com)
Cleveland Indians : 2B Jason Kipnis (oblique) could begin a minor league rehab assignment next week (MLB.com) ... OF Nyjer Morgan has been diagnosed with a sprained knee ligament and will be out indefinitely. (Cleveland Plain-Dealer)
Marlins: As expected, RHP Jose Fernandez underwent Tommy John surgery on Friday. The team announced that the procedure was successful.
Orioles: LHP Johan Santana (shoulder) pitched in an extended spring training game. (Baltimore Sun)
Rays: RHP Jeremy Hellickson (elbow) hopes to throw live batting practice next week. (Tampa Bay Times)
Reds: 1B Joey Votto has a quad injury, but an MRI showed his surgically repaired knee is fine. This is considered good news even though a DL stint is still possible ... C Devin Mesoraco (hamstring) was activated off the 15-day DL and LHP Tony Cingrani (shoulder) will be activated on Sunday.
Boston Red Sox : OF Shane Victorino is day-to-day with a swollen knee. He is not expected to need a DL stint, the team announced.
Colorado Rockies : RHP Rafael Betancourt (Tommy John surgery) threw his second bullpen session as part of his rehab. (MLB.com)
Detroit Tigers : RHP Joel Hanrahan (Tommy John surgery) was recently shut down during a bullpen session. The team decided he needed to build arm strength by throwing long toss before getting back up on a mound ... RHP Luke Putkonen (elbow) is heading to see Dr. James Andrews, the team announced.
Minnesota Twins : OF Josh Willingham (wrist) started a minor league rehab assignment on Friday ... OF Sam Fuld is still dealing with post concussion symptoms and is considered to be out indefinitely.
Chicago White Sox : LHP Chris Sale (elbow) struck out 11 in four scoreless innings in his first Triple-A rehab start.
1B Julio Franco: Franco, now 55, will play at least one homestand with the independent Fort Worth Cats.
Houston Astros : Manager Bo Porter said RHP Chad Qualls will be the team's primary closer. (MLB.com)
Indians: RHP Trevor Bauer will be recalled from Triple-A and join the rotation on Tuesday.
Rays: Manager Joe Maddon said RHP Grant Balfour is "absolutely" still his closer despite some recent meltdowns. (Tampa Bay Times)
