We had a full slate of baseball on Monday, and that means lots of news from around the league. Here is the daily recap:

RUMORS & TRANSACTIONS

Seattle Mariners : Released RHP Mark Rogers in the middle of a suspended Triple-A game.

Washington Nationals : Tried to sign RHP Doug Fister to a long-term contract soon after acquiring him from the Detroit Tigers over the winter.

San Diego Padres : Designated OF Xavier Nady for assignment, the team announced. 1B/OF Kyle Blanks was called up in a corresponding move.

INJURY UPDATES

Los Angeles Angels : OF Josh Hamilton (thumb) is expected to take live batting practice later this week (Orange County Register) ... OF Kole Calhoun (ankle) took batting practice on Monday. He is expected to be cleared to begin running soon (MLB.com) ... 3B David Freese (broken finger) fielded some ground balls but has not yet been cleared to throw or hit (MLB.com) ... LHP Sean Burnett (elbow) could be close to beginning a minor league rehab assignment. (MLB.com)

Houston Astros : RHP Matt Albers (shoulder) is expected to be activated off the 15-day DL this coming weekend. (MLB.com)

Toronto Blue Jays : RHP Casey Janssen (back) started a minor league rehab assignment after suffering a setback ... 3B Brett Lawrie left Monday's game with a hamstring problem and is listed as day-to-day. (MLB.com)

St. Louis Cardinals : RHP Jason Motte (Tommy John surgery) needs another 2-3 weeks of rehab appearances before joining the team, GM John Mozeliak confirmed ... RHP Joe Kelly (hamstring) is not progressing as hoped. (MLB.com)

Chicago Cubs : Prospect OF Jorge Soler (hamstring) is close to returning to action with the team's Double-A affiliate. (MLB.com)

Arizona Diamondbacks : OF A.J. Pollock (groin) did not play again on Monday, but he is "getting closer every day." (MLB.com)

Los Angeles Dodgers : LHP Hyun-Jin Ryu (shoulder inflammation) will begin a throwing program on Tuesday ... OF Yasiel Puig was not in Monday's lineup after crashing into the wall on Sunday. He is day-to-day ... C A.J. Ellis (knee) ran the bases for a third straight day. (Orange County Register)

Cleveland Indians : OF Michael Bourn (hamstring) was scheduled to "go hard" during running drills (MLB.com) ... DH Jason Giambi was placed on the 15-day DL with a right calf strain, the team announced.

Mariners: 1B/OF Logan Morrison 's strained hamstring is "not responding" to rest and treatment. (MLB.com)

Nationals: 3B Ryan Zimmerman (thumb) has not yet been cleared to begin strengthening exercises (MLB.com) ... C Wilson Ramos (wrist) caught nine innings in a minor league game and is close to returning ... OF Nate McLouth left Monday's game after crashing into the outfield wall. There has not yet been an update on his status.

Pittsburgh Pirates : C Russell Martin (hamstring) could begin baseball activities later this week (Pittsburgh Tribune-Review) ... LHP Wandy Rodriguez (knee) will make at least one more minor league rehab start. (Pittsburgh Tribune-Review)

Cincinnati Reds : OF Jay Bruce (partially torn meniscus) had surgery and will miss 3-4 weeks.

Minnesota Twins : 1B Joe Mauer (back spasms) was held out the lineup again ... OF Aaron Hicks (concussion) did some light hitting and OF Josh Willingham (wrist) did some light swinging. (MLB.com)

Chicago White Sox : LHP Chris Sale (flexor strain) threw a 40-pitch bullpen session but is still about two weeks away from a minor league rehab assignment ... RHP Nate Jones (back) had a microdiscectomy procedure and will be reevaluated in a month. (MLB.com)

New York Yankees : Likely to activate SS Brendan Ryan (back) off the 15-day DL on Tuesday.

MISCELLANY

Milwaukee Brewers : The appeal of OF Carlos Gomez 's three-game suspension will be heard on Friday. This is the suspension stemming from the benches clearing incident with the Pirates. (Journal Sentinel)
