For those unfamiliar, the area is in left field, close to the large Western Metal Supply Co. building that can see seen when looking toward the left-field foul pole. The area is right at the busiest gate into the ballpark, but it's also open to the public year round.
“We are thrilled to announce the dedication of the Selig Hall of Fame Plaza,” said Padres Executive Chairman Ron Fowler in a statement. “Moving forward, this area of the ballpark will serve as the cornerstone of a project celebrating the history of this franchise throughout Petco Park. It will bear Commissioner Selig’s name in recognition of, and with gratitude for, all that he has done for the game of baseball, both in San Diego and around the world.”
Selig was present for the ceremony Tuesday as part of his farewell tour in his final season as commissioner.
