Padres designate RHP Edinson Volquez for assignment
The Padres have cut bait on struggling right-hander Edinson Volquez.
This season, the 30-year-old Volquez has been awful: 6.01 ERA, 1.67 WHIP and 67 unintentional walks and 39 doubles allowed in 142 1/3 innings pitched. On Friday, he gave up six runs in 2/3 of an inning against the Cubs in what was perhaps the final straw.
In order to fill Volquez's spot on the roster, the Padres have recalled 27-year-old right-hander Brad Brach from Triple-A Tucson.
