Padres prospect Casey Kelly headed for Tommy John surgery
Young Padres right-hander Casey Kelly will miss the entirety of the 2013 season. He's slated to undergo reconstructive elbow surgery.
Kelly, 23, was acquired by the Padres as part of the December 2010 trade that sent Adrian Gonzalez to the Red Sox. Across parts of four minor-league seasons, Kelly has pitched to a 3.77 ERA, 1.27 WHIP and 2.99 K/BB ratio in 73 starts. Last season, Kelly logged a 6.21 ERA in six late-season starts for the Padres. However, he did strike out 26 batters in 29 innings.
Kelly will soon become the fourth pitcher in the Padre organization to undergo Tommy John surgery within the last year. Previously, Cory Luebke, Joe Wieland and minor-leaguer Juan Oramas underwent the procedure. A fifth pitcher, Tim Stauffer, had his flexor tendon repaired last August.
