Arizona Diamondbacks first baseman Paul Goldschmidt is one of the best players in baseball. He entered Wednesday hitting .305/.432/.567 with 13 home runs on the season -- numbers good for a 154 OPS+.

Yet on Tuesday night, Goldschmidt almost accomplished something truly special. That's because, as he was fielding a bunt against the San Diego Padres, he nearly scooped up a resting bird. Take a look:

Thankfully, it appears the bird escaped harm. Add in how Goldschmidt recorded the out -- on the lead runner, no less -- and everyone can enjoy this sequence of events to the fullest. Except for the Padres, that is -- they lost by a 10-2 score.

To honor this shining moment in first baseman-bird relations, we've decided to publish our five best (worst) puns about this play:

  1. Paul Goldschmidt and Mr. Met will be collaborating on a memoir: "Hold this bird"

  2. Snake in the grass nearly kills bird

  3. Goldschmidt almost ends up with fowl ball on bunt

  4. A bird in the hand keeps him from turning two

  5. What about the infield fly rule?
