Paul Maholm tore his ACL Friday night
Dodgers pitcher Paul Maholm was injured during Friday night's game against the Cubs. It turns out that he tore his ACL.
The news got worse Saturday for Maholm:
LHP Paul Maholm's MRI showed a tear of the ACL. He will see Dr. Neal ElAttrache and decide on treatment, including surgery.— Los Angeles Dodgers (@Dodgers) August 2, 2014
So, while it hasn't been officially said to be the case, we can assume Maholm's 2014 season is over.
The 32-year-old left-hander is 1-5 with a 4.84 ERA, 1.56 WHIP and 34 strikeouts against 28 walks in 70 2/3 innings. So he's not having a good season at all, but there is at least moderate value in a guy who can make spot starts, serve as a long reliever or simply eat innings in trash time, as was the case Friday. With that in mind, it wouldn't be surprising to see the Dodgers swing a trade (Carlos Villanueva?) for someone who can fill that role.
